Before we begin with the free hosting, you need to know few things. As you probably now it's important to be able to get your site ranking well in the search engine results in order to have more traffic. There are some free hosting programs that will allow you to host for free if you register your domain thru them or if you have domain and you transfer it to the free hosting.

I know some companies like this. If you buy the domain thru them it will cost you 18$/y and if you ttransfer a domain it will cost you 35$ one time fee. What you get is site on your own domain ( more reliable from the the visitor point of view) and not subdomain, you get non ads hosting for free and you dont have to place a link to the company, in other words you have the control af what you have on your pages.
